I started my business back in September 2020, right in the middle of a global pandemic, when a lot of people thought it was crazy to jump into entrepreneurship. I was clueless, working off instinct, determination, and sheer willpower. I poured every last dollar I had into my business, using up my savings, and I sacrificed countless hours to make it happen. And, five years later, I’m still grinding day and night.
But here’s the thing that gets me: I see a growing trend where some people think owning a business should come easy. They start a GoFundMe page when things get tough, asking others to pitch in for their dreams. Now, don’t get me wrong—I absolutely want people to succeed. But I think it’s essential to call out a hard truth: success in business takes relentless hard work, consistency, and a real commitment to figure things out, even when it seems impossible. I’ve noticed people starting businesses—sometimes with high expectations and little experience—and then seeming surprised when things don’t take off effortlessly.
Social media plays a big role in creating this illusion. When you scroll through Instagram or TikTok, it can look like every business owner is living the high life: perfect photos, steady sales, vacations, and an easygoing vibe. The truth is far from that. Being a business owner is not a ticket to a luxurious, stress-free life. Behind the scenes, the real work is gritty, exhausting, and often unglamorous.
I’ll admit this post might come across as judgmental, and I’ll own that. I’m judging from my experience, from knowing the sacrifice, hustle, and dedication it takes to keep a business afloat—especially in uncertain times. I see people jumping into the entrepreneurial space, often in industries like beauty, events, or baked goods, and assuming the journey will be smooth because it looks that way on their feeds. But if you’re not willing to sweat for it, to make sacrifices, and keep going even when it’s not working out, then the reality of business ownership will catch up.
Building a business means learning as you go, and sometimes, not knowing what you’re doing but still pushing forward. I’ll keep cheering people on because I do want everyone to win. But let’s be real—winning in business doesn’t come handed to you. It’s earned through hard work, dedication, and a real commitment to growth.
